Most of the African Association for Forensic and Legal Linguists (AAFLL) members are academics and researchers from all over the world who work in the fields of language, law, anthropology, psychology, criminology, and allied disciplines.

Purpose & Aims

The AAFLL seeks to enhance the administration of legal systems around Southern Africa through a more profound knowledge of the relationship between language and law. The Association’s more specific goals are to advance:

  • Study of legal terminology, particularly those used in court records, police reports, and prisoner communications;
  • The study of authorship and plagiarism, speaker identification and voice comparison, confessions, linguistic profiling, suicide notes, and consumer product warnings using linguistic evidence (phonological, morpho-syntactic, and discourse-pragmatic);
  • The use of language as evidence in legal actions (such as trademark infringement, contract disputes, defamation, product liability, and unfair business practices);
  • Reduction of linguistic discrimination and disadvantage in the legal system;
  • The communication of concepts and knowledge between the language and legal spheres;
  • Study of the use, development, and ethics of expert testimony, as well as interpreting, translating, and presenting linguistic evidence in court;
  • We are increasing public awareness of the relationship between language and the law.

Our Journey

The African Association for Forensic and Legal Linguistics (AAFLL) began as a visionary initiative born out of the shared passion and dedication of a group of linguists, legal professionals, and scholars committed to addressing the unique challenges facing the intersection of language and the law in Africa. Our journey started with a recognition of the critical role that language plays in the administration of justice, particularly in diverse and multilingual societies across the continent.

How We Started

AAFLL emerged from a series of collaborative conversations and interdisciplinary exchanges to explore the potential applications of linguistic analysis in forensic contexts within the African legal system. Driven by a desire to bridge the gap between academia and practice, our founding members envisioned an organization that would serve as a hub for knowledge-sharing, research collaboration, and capacity-building in forensic and legal linguistics.
